Souillac · South Mauritius

Things To Do in Souillac, Mauritius

The south of Mauritius is the most dramatic, least touristy part of the island. Souillac sits at the centre of it all — beaches, waterfalls, nature reserves, and a wild coastline unlike the resort areas up north.

8 Things To Do Near Souillac

From dramatic coastline to lush waterfalls — all within a short drive or walk from Manor Villa.

01

Gris Gris Beach

Natural Wonder· 5 min walk from Manor Villa

The wildest beach in Mauritius. Dark volcanic cliffs, crashing waves, and dramatic sea views. Not a swimming beach — a photography and atmosphere destination unlike anything on the island.

Tip: Best at sunrise or early morning before tour groups arrive. The path from Souillac centre is walkable.
02

La Roche Qui Pleure

Coastal Landmark· 5 min walk from Manor Villa

Named "the rock that cries" — a volcanic rock formation where waves crash dramatically against the shore. Located right next to Gris Gris. One of the most photographed spots in south Mauritius.

Tip: Walk there from Gris Gris. The two sites are essentially the same 15-minute walk from Manor Villa.
03

Rochester Falls

Waterfall· 10 min drive from Manor Villa

The most unique waterfall in Mauritius. The water runs over columns of volcanic basalt rock, creating a striking geological landscape. The area is lush, shaded, and peaceful.

Tip: Park at the entry point and follow the trail down. Go early — tour buses arrive by mid-morning. Entry is free.
04

Souillac Waterfront

Town Area· 5 min from Manor Villa

A quiet coastal promenade in Souillac town. Local restaurants, views of the southern ocean, and a more authentic Mauritian atmosphere than the resort areas up north.

Tip: Good spot for a casual evening meal. Local food options are affordable and genuinely good.
05

La Vanille Nature Park

Nature Reserve· 15 min drive from Manor Villa

Home to giant Aldabra tortoises, Nile crocodiles, deer, and tropical birds in a lush natural setting. One of the best family attractions in the south.

Tip: Allocate 2–3 hours. Entry fee applies. Good for the morning — gets warm by early afternoon.
06

Telfair Garden

Historic Garden· 20 min drive from Manor Villa

A historic botanical garden in Mahébourg, named after the colonial botanist Charles Telfair. Peaceful, shaded, and largely undiscovered by the tourist crowds.

Tip: Best combined with a visit to the Mahébourg Waterfront area.
07

Heritage Nature Reserve

Nature Reserve· 20 min drive from Manor Villa

A large private nature reserve in the south offering deer safaris, quad biking, and eco-trails through Mauritius's remaining native forest.

Tip: Activities need to be booked in advance. The deer safari at sunrise is exceptional.
08

Mahébourg Waterfront

Town & Museum· 25 min drive from Manor Villa

The historic harbour town with a waterfront promenade, local market, and the National History Museum. A genuine Mauritian town experience — not a resort construction.

Tip: Saturday morning market is worth timing your trip around. The museum is small but free.
